Thosghts in Tuesday...Mice!

Me was thinking about mouses today...

Mes has heard the the following question from peoples: What is the best food to feed my cat? Mes knows it is dependent on the age, body condition and health of the cat.  However, for the average adult healthy cat, wes should eats a canned diet with the following composition:
  • >50% of the calories from protein
  • <10% carbohydrates
  • at least 30% from fat
It is because us cats are obligate carnivores. We is designed to eat meat.
And what else could wes eat besides canned food --  6-6 mice!

Mice is high in protein (48 percent), low in carbohydrates (5 percent) and approximately 48 kcal per mouse.
And Cats and Mice...we has history!

First is EGYPT!!

In ancient Egypt, the cat was first valued for devouring rodents that infested the village grain bins. The Egyptians even worshiped us!

And wes even gots to travel.. When people's went to sea, wes gots to bes ship's cats!

Us cats have been carried on ships for many reasons, the most important being to catch mice and rats. These rodents aboard a ship can cause damage to ropes, woodwork and eventually as technology progressed, electrical wiring.
Rodents threatened the food and the cargo the ship carried.
Rats and mice were also sources of disease, which is dangerous for ships that are at sea for long periods of time. For example, rat fleas are carriers of plague and it is believed rats on ships were one of the main spreaders of the Black Death.
There has even been stories writed about these cats! Has yous readed Dick Whittingdon and his cat?

Once upon a time, me was a great mouser!
When wes first moved to Midway in 2001 me terrorized the local mouses. Me used to brings them home and gives them to Mommy.
Now that mes in the city...mes is in a apartment and wes don't has any mice...

But mes can dream!

Kisses
Nellie

  2. We have some mice or rats living around here... but I confess, I am a lousy hunter! My human has to help me catch them! And if she helps, I don't get to keep them - she takes them somewhere far, far away!

  5. We had a mouse a long time ago (and with different kitties) and they didn't know what to do with it. One was genuinely puzzled when the 'toy' he was playing with stopped moving.

  8. We live in the city, but sometimes we gets little field mousies in the house in the winter time. We, unfortunately, didn't have any this past winter. Mommy would never let us eat one. She says, we don' know where they have been, and since we don't live in the wild our tummy isn't used to them. Pffft! 10. Whoa! Great history lesson. Every once in a while, we hear something in the wall and I spring into action. I throw myself against the wall. I want a mouse badly. Why do you suppose they don't make mouse flavored wet food? I heard you can buy them freeze dried. BTW, if you remember that song Lucifer Sam was about a ship's cat.

  16. Oh, what a wonderful dream, Nellie!

  17. Our boys think mice are nice. Domino doesn't hunt much any more but Odin does 24/7 indoors and outdoors. There should be a hunter's awards for him. He barely sleeps! Sweet mousey dreams dearest Nellie. Merlin was an awesome hunter (even chimpmunks) in his prime before he lost his vision.

  21. We love this mouse celebration post! When we got Rufus the Red, he had been living in a feral colony for the company and free foods. He was full of parasites. The vet said it was from eating mouses and dead stuff. So, only eat healthy fresh mouses, kitties!
